Candidates sought for District 59 board vacancy

Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the school board.

The new school board seated Wednesday night is one member short of a full seven-member body because only two candidates ran for three available seats in the April 5 election.

Re-elected board members Thomas Dowd and Brian Kiel, both on the panel since 2007, were sworn in for new four-year terms this week while the seat vacated by Brian Gilligan, who did not seek re-election, remains open.

School district officials said they could only begin the search for a candidate to fill Gilligan’s seat after the new board was seated.

Returning board members are Sharon Roberts, elected in 2005; Mardell Schumacher, appointed in 1988; Barbara Somogyi, who served from 1975 to 1978 and was elected in 1981; and Robert Weber, elected in 2005. Their terms are up in April 2013.

Applicants must be a resident of District 59, be at least 18 years old, be a registered voter and U.S. citizen (and not a registered sex offender).

Applications must be received at the District 59 Administration Center, 2123 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005 by 4 p.m. Friday, May 6.

Interested parties may call the district’s main office at (847) 593-4300 for more information about the vacancy or visit the district’s website, ccsd59.org.
