Mundelein to relaunch farmers market

With “buy local” becoming a popular slogan when it comes to fruits and vegetables, Mundelein will relaunch a farmers market this summer.

The effort will run Friday afternoons and evenings from June 3 to Oct. 14. The market will be set up at the southwest corner of Park Street and Seymour Avenue, in the heart of Mundelein's downtown business district.

The booths will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. each day, rain or shine.

Mundelein last hosted a farmers market about 15 years ago, but the effort was small and didn't last very long, Assistant Village Administrator Michael Flynn recalled.

The new market is coordinated by the Mundelein Community Connection, a downtown revitalization group that replaced the Mundelein MainStreet group.

More than 20 vendors already are signed up, and they'll offer produce, meat, flowers, cheeses and other products.

Flynn is excited about the opportunity to buy produce “straight from the farm.”

Shopping outdoors on a Friday night should be fun, too, he said.

At each market, a local business and a local nonprofit organization will be offered space to promote themselves.

The market will set up in a vacant parking lot, so no streets will be closed during the event. Customers can park on the streets in the area or in a nearby public lot, Flynn said.

Other Lake County communities hosting farmers markets include Buffalo Grove, Libertyville, Gurnee and Grayslake.
