No charges in fatal Wheeling accident

A truck driver who struck and killed a bicyclist in Wheeling on Monday will not be ticketed, police said today.

The bicyclist, Alfonso Delgado Balderas, 43, of Wheeling, was riding southbound on Wolf Road just south of Messner Drive about 1 p.m. when he turned left in front of a white 2003 International box truck, police said.

The truck driver, a 37-year-old Cicero man, told officers Balderas did not look before he tried to turn, according to police. Balderas appeared to have been trying to turn into a private driveway on the east side of the road, police said.

Balderas was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 4:38 p.m.

Investigators are awaiting results of toxicology reports on Balderas, said Wheeling Deputy Police Chief John Teevans.

Balderas had returned to Illinois from Mexico about two weeks ago, where his wife and two children currently reside, according to Wheeling police.
