Music events: Soul Asylum at Viper Alley Friday

Minnesota nice

Soul Asylum emerged from the great Minneapolis rock scene of the 1980s. The band released a series of solid punk-flavored alternative rock records during that decade but labored in the shadow of scene leaders Husker Du and The Replacements. Then came 1992's “Grave Dancers Union,” a record that gave Soul Asylum worldwide success. The band, which now includes former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson, is reportedly working on a new record. In the meantime, fans can see the band live during a show this weekend in the suburbs.

8 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Viper Alley, 275 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire. $25-$40. Go to viper-alley.com.

Rock, Texas style

The Chris Duarte Group hits the suburbs this weekend for a helping of blistering blues-rock that comes straight from Duarte's home state of Texas. Duarte is touring behind the group's latest record, “Infinite Energy,” a nod to one of Duarte's idols, Jimi Hendrix.

7 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the Clearwater Theater, 96 W. Main St., West Dundee. $10. Go to clearwatertheater.com.

‘Icon' status

Rock band Local H, which burst out of the Lake County suburbs in the early 1990s, has been spotlighted in Universal Music's new “Icon” line of greatest-hits releases — collections from bands deemed to represent a genre and a generation. The duo of Scott Lucas and Brian St. Clair will perform this weekend, spotlighting the singles included on “Local H: The Island Years.” And yes, fans, a new album is coming soon.
