Email: Commander was unaware of Sheen escort in DC

WASHINGTON — An email shows that a D.C. police commander was unaware that officers provided actor Charlie Sheen with an escort last week.

In the email sent to other department officials, obtained Monday by The Associated Press, Hilton Burton demands details about the escort given to Sheen on the way to his performance at DAR Constitution Hall. Burton is commander of the department's Special Operations Division.

Burton wrote that the Sheen incident is an example of why police should be careful about who is given escorts. He also demands to know how it was approved.

Sheen posted on Twitter last Tuesday night that he had received an escort and included a picture of a speedometer registering about 80 mph. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has said several policies appear to have been violated.

A D.C. police spokeswoman declined to comment.
