Daily Herald web site garners state award

The Daily Herald's web site was recognized for its overall excellence by the Illinois Associated Press Editors Association.

The organization announced the web site's second-place finish this week in addition to other awards that will be handed out at its June 9 annual meeting in Springfield.

The Daily Herald competes against other Illinois newspapers with circulations of more than 40,000 in this contest.

The Chicago Sun-Times received first place for its web site and the Rockford Register Star came in third in the judging.

In addition to the web site's honor, Senior Writer Jake Griffin received a second-place award in the public service journalism category for his coverage of the DuPage Water Commission's financial miscues. The stories revealed how the agency misspent its $69 million reserve fund and the subsequent fallout and reactive legislation that followed.

In that category, the Belleville News Democrat finished first and the Daily SouthtownStar received a third-place award.
