Cary-Grove’s Freeman double winner

Josh Freeman believes he will improve before the season is over.

But the Cary-Grove junior was certainly pleased with his performance at Wednesday’s McHenry County Meet held at Crystal Lake Central.

Freeman won the discus with a throw of 139 feet, 4 inches and the shot put with a heave of 49-6 ½.

“I felt I had good technique and felt good about my release,” said Freeman. “I tried to block out the cold and the wind and was happy to win both events. I know what I need to work on in practice to get better.”

Freeman’s teammate, Anthony Golowach, was the county champion in the high jump with a jump of 6-3. Golowach, who jumped 6-9 last season, knows he has room to improve.

“Sure, it is nice to win the county but I didn’t jump well at all,” said the Cary-Grove senior. “Because of the conditions I was very cautious and didn’t jump my best. I couldn’t get a good lift.”

After the 6 field events, McHenry leads the boys’ meet with 44 points followed by Crystal Lake Central with 41 and Cary-Grove with 32.

The running events will start at 5 p.m. today at Cary-Grove High School.

Girls meet: Crystal Lake South senior Kamile Udrenaite had every reason to smile.

Udrenaite claimed both the shot put (36-11 ½) and discus (112-6) at Wednesday’s McHenry County meet.

The Gator thrower edged out Prairie Ridge standout Taylor Humm in both events. Humm threw the shot 36-10 ½ and the discus 110-3.

“(Humm) brings out the best in me,” said Udrenaite. “I know I have throw well to beat her. My technique and speed were both very good. I just blocked out the weather and stayed positive.”

Jacobs senior Olivia Mayer claimed the long jump with a jump of 16-6, edging the McHenry duo of Miranda Rorer (16-4 ½) and Ashley Conway (16-2 ¾).

“It feels great to win the county especially with all the great competition,” said Mayer. “I was terrible in the preliminaries, but jumped well in the finals.”

Mayer’s teammate, Allie Virgilio, won the triple jump with a leap of 36-1 while Crystal Lake South’s Lexi Dahl won the pole vault with a vault of 10-7.

After the 6 field events, McHenry leads with 44 points followed by Crystal Lake South (30), Jacobs (28) and Cary-Grove (20).
