Hicks’ domestic battery trial postponed in McHenry County

A jury trial on domestic battery charges accusing former Des Plaines police Sgt. Matthew Hicks of striking his wife has been postponed until Oct. 3.

McHenry County Judge Gordon Graham threw out evidence prosecutors planned use in their case against Hicks before the trial was scheduled to begin earlier this week. The McHenry County state’s attorney’s office chose to appeal the ruling to the Illinois Appellate Court, causing the trial delay.

Hicks, an 18-year Des Plaines police department veteran, is accused of striking his wife, pulling her hair and preventing her from calling police during an April 18, 2010 altercation at their Huntley home.

The Des Plaines police department last week dropped seven internal misconduct charges against Hicks after both sides came to an agreement under which he will apply for a disability pension and never again work as a police officer for the city.
