Humpfer, Marks, Burroway win in Carpentersville

Beleaguered Carpentersville Trustee Paul Humpfer has been re-elected to his seat, and two new faces will join his on the village board, according to tonight’s election results.

With all 21 precincts in Kane County reporting, Humpfer had 445 votes, challenger Doug Marks had 498 votes and planning and zoning commission member Don Burroway had 394 votes in the race for three 4-year seats.

Losing the race were Kent Baldwin with 368 votes and Humberto Garcia with 349 votes. Humpfer and Marks — who ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Libertarian last year — campaigned together, while Garcia, a small-business man from Mexico City, and Burroway teamed up.

While Burroway says his win is bittersweet because Garcia didn’t score a seat, Garcia says he plans on running again in two years.

“It’s just the beginning,” Garcia said. “I can tell you I’m here to stay.”

When it comes to saving money, Burroway and Garcia said they support staff pay cuts, while Marks pushed regionalizing Carpentersville’s fire services.

Humpfer, credited with helping right the village’s financial ship, has had a rocky history on the board. He ignored a challenge to step down in 2008 after being found guilty of domestic battery for hitting his then-wife in the legs with a baseball bat. He has denied the charges.
