South Barrington man arrested on drug charge

A potential hazardous materials incident led South Barrington Police to a cannabis growing operation early Friday night.

Kyle J. Kaszeynski, 22, of 0 to 100 block of Revere Drive, was charged with a felony count of marijuana manufacturing for growing cannabis plants out of the basement of his home, said South Barrington Deputy Chief Ray Cordell.

In addition, Kaszeynski was charged with misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia following his arrest at about 6 p.m. on March 25, Cordell said.

Cordell said Kaszeynski is currently being held in Cook County jail in lieu of $10,000 bond, of which he must post 10 percent.

Cordell said officers were summoned to the home following a burglary alarm at about 5:30 p.m. on March 25. Officers scanned he property and discovered an open door on the property when checking.

Officers entered and swept through the home, eventually entering the basement where there was a strong smell of cannabis, Cordell said. During the same search, Cordell said officers came across a large number of chemicals, causing them to fear they had stumbled across a drug manufacturing house.

“They immediately left the home and called the Barrington Countryside Fire Department, as they have been trained to do,” he said. “Firefighters learned the chemicals were used for blowing glass pipes in the basement of the home, and an all clear sign was given.”

He said Barrington-Countryside fire officials called out a mutual aid box alarm for assistance before issuing an all clear.

Police obtained a search warrant for the home, Cordell said, where 36 cannabis plants were discovered and confiscated.

Kaszeynski came home after the search had begun and was arrested without incident, Cordell said.
