Voris, Brottman excel on college diamond

And they received some more honors.

Former standout pitchers Claire Voris (Barrington) and Lena Brottman (Fremd) were named to the 2011 University Athletic Association 12-player all-tournament team.

No. 1 ranked Emory, which posted a perfect 8-0 mark to win its second-straight league title, received 3 wins from Brottman (11-0, 1.17 ERA).

The freshman did not give up a run in 12 innings, striking out 11. She hurled a shutout against Rochester, striking out five in 5 innings.

Voris, a senior infielder/pitcher for Washington University in St. Louis, batted .375 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI and hit safely in five of the eight games played.

She went 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI against Case Western Reserve and 3-for-3 against No. 10 Emory.

Voris (6-2) also posted a 1-0 record with a 4.88 earned run average in 14 innings as Washington finished in second place in the conference championship tournament with a 6-2 record.

Women’s gymnastics

Missouri junior Mary Burke (Fremd) recorded an all-around total of 39.300 to win the Big 12 Championship meet as the Tigers placed fourth overall with a 194.975.

Nebraska took home first place with a 196.775.

Burke and Missouri will head to Norman, Okla., to compete in the 2011 NCAA Regional Championship on April 2 in the Lloyd Noble Center. The bid marks the Tigers’ 10th consecutive regional appearance, and the 23rd appearance in program history.

Burke has been named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week four times this season, and five in her career as well.

Ÿ Northern Illinois senior Holly Reichard (Fremd) has been selected to compete in the NCAA South Central Regional as an individual for the third time in her four-year career with the Huskies.

Reichard will also compete at the Norman Regional.

She is only the fourth NIU women’s gymnast to make at least three appearances at the NCAA Regionals and the first since 2005.

“It is very fitting for Holly to be able to continue her final season at NCAA Regionals,” said NIU coach Mark Sontag in a release from the school. “I am so happy to see her be able to continue a fantastic career in the postseason. It’s been an honor to coach Holly for four years and to see her at the top of her game this season, with great routines on all four events every time she goes out there, is a testament to her hard work and dedication.”

Reichard was chosen for regionals as a freshman in 2008 and again in 2009.

A year ago, she competed with a leg injury throughout much of the season, missed several meets and was limited to only a couple of events in others.

The same injury has limited her training time as a senior, but did not stop the Palatine native from attaining some of the best scores of her career in 2011.

As an all-arounder, Reichard reached the 39-point mark three times and scored 38.6 or higher in six competitions.

Her best event in 2011 was balance beam, where she averaged a 9.7.

Reichard scored 9.8 or higher in each of NIU’s last three meets, including at the MAC Championships, where she tied for third place.

“After going through the injury last year, and knowing that it has still bothered her throughout this whole season, what she’s done as a senior has been that much more impressive,” Sontag said. “To get those 39 (total) all-around scores and put herself in a position to be the No. 3 seeded all-arounder going into regionals is a great accomplishment and we are very, very proud.”

Men’s soccer

Frankie Gorg (Hersey) was Illinois Wesleyan’s male recipient of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s “Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference and CCIW Academic All-Conference” for the 2010 season.

The Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference award began during the 1999-2000 year and recognizes two student-athletes (one male, one female) from each CCIW institution during the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.

To be eligible, an individual must have an overall grade-point average of 3.50 or above and must have lettered in their respective sport for that season. Gorg was the starting goalkeeper for Illinois Wesleyan’s soccer team this past season. He is a math and risk management major.

Women’s basketball

Northwestern junior Allison Mocchi (Buffalo Grove) was one of three team captains. The Wildcats finished the season with 19 wins and a second consecutive appearance in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

As the second player off the bench, Mocchi finished the season third on the team in steals and blocked shots, fourth in assists and fifth in rebounds while averaging 17.5 minutes per game.

She was instrumental in four of Northwestern’s most significant wins of the season.

In a 76-64 victory over Penn State on Jan. 2, Mocchi registered 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in just 13 minutes.

On Jan. 31, she collected 9 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists in just 16 minutes as Northwestern beat Ohio State 64-53.

On Feb. 20, Mocchi had 4 points 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot in a 62-50 triumph over Minnesota.

And on March 3, when Northwestern won its first Big Ten Tournament game since 2000, Mocchi grabbed 9 rebounds and handed out 5 assists in a 53-44 victory over Minnesota.

Ÿ Despite missing the last 12 games of the season due to an injury, Loyola junior Ellen Ayoub (Buffalo Grove) led the team in shooting percentage and finished second in scoring at 11 points a game.

Ayoub also led the team in rebounds per game (5.5) and was second in free throw shooting percentage.

In 19 games, she scored in double digits eight times while registering two double-doubles. She was named to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll for the 2010 fall semester.

Men’s basketball

Augustana junior point guard Brian DeSimone (Buffalo Grove) led the Vikings to a conference championship and the elite eight of the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.

DeSimone was third on the team in scoring while leading in minutes played, assists, and steals. He was a third team all-CCIW Conference selection as Augustana finished its season with a 27-4 record, the second-most victories in school history.
