Pedestrian struck, killed in Wilmette, Metra trains delayed

A pedestrian was struck and killed by Metra train Friday afternoon in Wilmette, Metra officials said.

At 4:38 p.m., Wilmette police responded to the call after Union Pacific-North Line train No. 335 hit a pedestrian as the train was heading north to Kenosha. The train had just left Evanston’s Davis Street stop and was not scheduled to stop in Wilmette, said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.

The train departed Ogilvie Transportation Center on time at 4:13 p.m. but was delayed after the incident. At 6:30 p.m. Wilmette police released the train and allowed to proceed north, a good sign Reile said.

At 7:23 p.m. service was restored to Union Pacific North-Line northbound trains.

“I’m hoping (rush hour commuters) found other modes of transportation,” Reile said.

Wilmette police were unable to provide further information on the incident at this time. A police official confirmed that a fatal accident occurred and that they are currently investigating the matter.
