Illness sends Peavy to sidelines

Starting pitcher Jake Peavy is suffering from a stomach virus and was sent home early Thursday, according to a report from the White Sox.

It is unknown if Peavy is going to feel good enough to make his next Cactus League start, which is scheduled for Saturday against Oakland.

Peavy was given fluids and medicine Thursday and his vital signs were “perfect,” according to a Sox official.

After making outstanding progress from major surgery to repair a torn lat muscle in his posterior right shoulder last July, Peavy’s stomach virus should not be much of a factor in his comeback.

The 29-year-old right-hander could make his regular season debut on April 6, at Kansas City. But with an off day on April 4, the White Sox could skip Peavy and let him start on April 10, at home vs. Tampa Bay.

In 3 exhibition starts, Peavy is 0-2 with a 3.72 ERA. He has allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits (2 home runs) to go with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.
