Sugar Bush Fair held this weekend

The Sugar Bush Fair — the Schaumburg Park District’s annual demonstration of Native American and early pioneer methods of sap collecting and syrup making — is going organic this year.

This weekend marks the 26th anniversary of the Sugar Bush Fair, and this time the event’s delicious outdoor breakfast will be provided by organic grocer Whole Foods Market in Schaumburg.

The fair runs from 9 a.m. to noon both Saturday and Sunday at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg.

As well as demonstrations of centuries-old syrup-making techniques, the event includes a children’s puppet show, hayrides and syrup sales.

“It is a one-of-a-kind experience,” said Dave Brooks, manager of nature conservation for the park district. “And after seeing how maple syrup is made, there’s a delicious Whole Foods Market breakfast.”

Admission to the fair itself is free, though there is a charge for the breakfast of pancakes, maple syrup, sausage, juice and coffee. Advance tickets for the breakfast are $3.50 for a half stack and $4.50 for a full stack. Day-of prices are $4 and $5, respectively.

Most of the event occurs outdoors, and even breakfast is served under a tent, so dress appropriately for the weather.

Parking is available at Spring Valley. There will be transportation between the nature center and the Merkle Cabin.
