For Dist. 200 board: Vroman, Gambaiani, Radencich

Daily Herald Editorial Board

The most important tasks facing any school board are the selection of a superintendent, the creation of policies that lead to educational excellence and the ability to communicate openly with the community it serves.

In Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200, the school board has done a good job in helping provide an excellent education, but has fallen short in terms of openness, particularly regarding its decision not to explain the mysterious departure of former Superintendent Richard Drury just months after he was given a contract extension and its earlier efforts to block residents from obtaining copies of former Superintendent Gary Catalani’s contract.

We believe it’s time to inject some new blood with the hope it will inspire the board to pursue transparency at all levels. Happily, the seven-way race for three four-year terms features many thoughtful challengers who seem to have a good grasp of the issues and who, we trust, will urge more openness. We endorse James Vroman, Jim Gambaiani and Michael Radencich. All three are serious about their commitment. We also like the financial acumen Gambaiani and Radencich bring as well as Vroman’s experience as an attorney and negotiator.

Others on the ballot are incumbents Rosemary Swanson and John Bomher and newcomers Harold Lonks and Alisha Ali.
