Candidate’s blog hateful, sexist

I am a stay-at-home Glen Ellyn mother of two, an attorney by trade. I try to be an informed and thorough voter and have recently read the candidate profiles for the upcoming municipal election. I was very disappointed when I followed a link to a blog written by Glen Ellyn Park District candidate Catherine Galvin.

The blog is riddled with bitterness and inflammatory commentary, but one statement stayed with me, as it was particularly insulting. On December 22, 2009, Galvin writes: “In all of Creech’s comments against Staff and her fellow Board members she has never bothered to fully explain where she obtained her expertise as a Project Manager on a multimillion dollar facility. This is not the usual expertise of most housewives’ and ex teachers.”

Galvin writes the above statement within her “notes” from a meeting wherein park board member Melissa Creech raised several important questions regarding funding and management of the Ackerman Sports Center project. What does Galvin mean to imply? That women who choose to stay home with their children are inept? That ex-teachers are unable to raise questions regarding fiscal responsibility? That our public servants, who come from all walks of life (and should), need to demonstrate experience as “project managers” before interviewing, hiring and receiving reports from qualified contractors on municipal projects?

Unfortunately, I think that Galvin meant to be nothing but hateful, and frankly, sexist, with this comment. I, for one, will not be voting for someone so very reckless.
