North Aurora seeks bids for village hall renovation

North Aurora is seeking bids for renovating its village hall, a project it expects may cost up to $1.4 million.

The village board gave the go-ahead earlier this week.

Officials have planned to expand administrative offices into the old police department since the building of the new police station was approved in 2008. The new station opened last fall.

The budget estimates $974,000 for construction, $197,000 for project administration, $151,000 for project consultants (of which $69,000 has already been spent) and $95,000 for furniture, fixtures and equipment.

Bids will be opened April 15 and the village board will vote on the matter May 2. If it accepts a bid, work is expected to begin in June and end in December.

The plan includes new windows and a new heating and ventilation system for the current village hall side; closing the risers on the concrete steps that lead to the second floor and putting in new guardrails and stair rails; 26 new doors and door frames; adding several restrooms; removing the concrete floor and ceiling of a former cell; and building new vestibules and a new entrance tower. There’s also plumbing work, including a new water main, and waterproofing the basement walls.

The village hall, at 25 E. State St., opened in 1972. The police station was added on in 1990.
