Critically deficient bridge in Rolling Meadows getting fixed
The Illinois Department of Transportation is reducing lanes on Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows next week to repair a bridge over Salt Creek.
The bridge was one of several featured in a special report on bridge safety by the Daily Herald in December that showed one out of every 13 bridges in the six-county metropolitan Chicago region is deemed “structurally deficient” by inspectors. The deck and some of the supporting structures were listed in “critical” condition by inspectors last year, according to state transportation department reports.
The bridge is one of 78 in suburban Cook County considered deficient in the state reports. In all, there were 293 deficient bridges out of the 3,691 in the six-county region in 2009, according to state and federal documents.
Weather permitting, road crews are expected to begin reducing lanes Tuesday to one in each direction, officials said. The reduced lanes will occur between Newport and Carriage Way drives.
The project to repair the decrepit bridge will cost $1.6 million and will require crews to remove and replace the existing deck, raise the height of the structure and install new sidewalks, gutter, curbs and guardrails. The work is slated to be done by mid-August, IDOT officials said.
Dunnet Bay Construction Co. of Glendale Heights is the primary contractor for this project, according to state records.
