UI Extension launches manure hauling project

The University of Illinois Extension is launching a project to keep horse manure out of landfills.

The "Changing Manure Streams" project will be offered in Lake, McHenry and northern Cook counties.

Garbage haulers will be able to pick up horse manure and bedding and take it to a compost facility instead of a landfill.

Extension educator Ellen Phillips says the idea is to set up pilot routes between stables and commercial composters, nurseries and park districts.

She says the cost will be less or the same as the current system.

The extension has gotten funding for the project from the Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Program.
