Northbound traffic on Route 53 was completely shut down during rush hour today as emergency crews responded to a crash near Palatine, officials said.

The Palatine Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded about 4:45 p.m. to the two-car crash in the northbound lanes of Route 53 between Rand and Palatine roads, officials said.

One person was extricated from a vehicle that flipped over and transported to Northwest Community Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries, a fire department official said.

A person in the second vehicle also was transported to Northwest Community with nonlife threatening injuries.

All four lanes of traffic were shut down for about 25 minutes, but two lanes had been reopened as of 5:15 p.m.
