Marsh to pay fired workers $42K but won't rehire

FISHERS, Ind. — Marsh Supermarkets has agreed to pay $42,500 to two fired workers but refuses to rehire them.

The Fishers-based grocer agreed to the terms Wednesday shortly before a hearing regarding allegations that they violated labor laws by attempting to disrupt union efforts. Marsh says the settlement was reached to avoid the cost of the hearing.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 700 has been in the process of seeing whether Marsh employees want union representation. The dispute between Marsh management and workers began when a union election in September was canceled because a worker was fired for failing a breath test.

The Indianapolis Star reports Marsh has promised not to interfere with future unionization attempts.
