COD student gets Argonne lab internship

College of DuPage student Azeam Anjum of Naperville has been accepted into the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program this spring at Argonne National Laboratory.

During the internship, which runs through the end of April, Anjum is working on the development of the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions and Energy Use in Transportation model.

“GREET is a simulation tool that evaluates environmental sustainability of alternative energy sources,” Anjum explained. “I will help implement the architecture of GREET in the Microsoft.net framework.”

This is the second prestigious internship that Anjum has earned. In summer 2010, he was one of two students who participated in a program at Fermilab National Laboratory.

Richard Jarman, professor of Chemistry at College of DuPage, praises the abilities of Anjum, who was in his honors Chemistry 1552 class last spring.

“He has displayed great initiative in securing these two internships,” Jarman said. “At Fermilab, he was the first community college student hired there through the Department of Energy's Community College Institute internship program. Now he's at Argonne in the highly competitive SULI program. Azeam has demonstrated that great things can be achieved at COD through hard work and initiative.”

The process for acceptance into SULI includes a rigorous online application that incorporates academic accomplishments, work experience and technical skills, including problem-solving abilities.

In addition to his internship, Anjum is currently taking a full load of classes. After finishing at College of DuPage, he would like to transfer to a baccalaureate-granting school and pursue mechanical engineering.

“This semester will be challenging, but I'm determined to succeed,” he said. “I feel very honored. There are not many people who can say they've worked at both major government laboratories in this area. I hope other students at COD can follow my example. It proves that students at a community college can not only shoot for the stars but also reach their goals.”
