The skinny: While the Blue Demons battled to the end Saturday night at No. 15 Louisville, they still wound up with a 61-57 loss that tied the Big East record for most consecutive defeats against conference foes. DePaul tied Miami (1993-95) with 23 straight Big East losses. The Blue Demons should have chances to avoid claiming the mark for themselves. Cincinnati forward Yancy Gates (15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals when the Bearcats beat DePaul 76-60 on Dec. 28 in both teams’ Big East opener) was suspended for Saturday’s loss to Pittsburgh. Gates’ suspension hasn’t been lifted, though the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that he joined the team for Monday’s flight to O’Hare. Regardless of Gates’ status, DePaul needs to match Cincinnati’s physical play and avoid the 17 turnovers it committed in the teams’ first meeting.
