Detailed snow-clearing begins in Batavia

Batavia snow-clearing is in the cleanup mode, and officials expect that to go on for several weeks.

Drivers have plowed snow as far back as possible.

Water Department workers are digging out fire hydrants downtown, then will move to the residential areas. Residents are asked to clear the hydrants now if they can.

City workers were to begin clearing snow from sidewalks and parking spaces on Wilson Street from Route 31 to Washington Street from 11 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday. Road closures were expected, including closing the bridge for a few hours sometime after 2 a.m.

North River Street to State Street and State to Washington will be closed from 7 to 10 a.m. Friday to clear snow from parking areas and sidewalks.

Next week the city will remove snow from the middle of its parking lot and push up drifts in the industrial parks.

The city is working on a plan to clear snow from areas where it is still out in the street several feet, because plows couldn’t throw snow any higher or farther back. And next week it will address the issue of mailboxes damaged by plowing. The city has some temporary mailboxes available; contact the public works department at (630) 454-2300.

Snow piles in cul-de-sacs still need to be relocated, but that may take several weeks.
