All-nighter in Vernon Hills

In Vernon Hills, Public Works Director David Brown never left his office.

“I’ve been working straight for 26 hours. The key for us is making sure all roads are passible, which we’ve been successful.”

Aside from a trouble spot on Fairway Drive near the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex made tricky by drifting snow, Brown said the full fleet of 20 pieces of equipment have been keeping pace. Three trucks were stuck on Fairway, including one that ran into a 4-foot drift in the roadway but all were freed without incident, he added.

”We kept the other mainline streets open all night. They just consistently keep looping and looping and looping.”

Brown said plow crews have been working since 4 p.m. Tuesday and there is another aspect to the work that people may forget.

“After these guys put in these long, long shifts, they get to ho home and shovel their driveways,” he said.
