Prairie View woman surprised to find post office closed

Mary Iskerka of unincorporated Prairie View in Lake County figured the old U.S. Postal Service credo about not allowing snow and gloom of night to keep carriers from their appointed rounds meant she could ship a DVD on Wednesday morning.

Iskerka, 47, hoofed nearly two miles in the beastly conditions only to find the Buffalo Grove post office was closed. She said she was “a little bit” surprised the post office wasn’t staffed.

“I know it’s a 24-hour post office to get to the (lobby) boxes, so I knew I could get in the door,” Iskerka said while standing in deep snow on a deserted Checker Road. “But then there’s nobody at the desk.”

So why the urgency to mail the DVD?

Iskerka said she’s a gymnastics judge and used the DVD to study for a test. Iskerka said she wanted to return it to a Barrington woman who also is a gymnastics judge and wanted it in the mail by Tuesday, so it cold be loaned to someone else.
