Your storm, your story

We've covered a lot of snowstorms, blizzards and white outs in the suburbs. And we've never seen a lede or headline about the “white stuff” that we didn't love ... even if our journalism instructors all taught us to avoid that cliche.

Despite several cynical journalists who think our version of snowgate will fizzle out, we're making plans in the newsroom about how to cover this week's. We're also trying to figure out who can work at home, who should risk their necks to go out and get the stories and who should be thinking about bringing a sleeping bag to the office.

We're also trying to figure out how to make sure you get your papers on time and not buried in the snow. We'll do our best by starting the press early and getting our trucks on the roads earlier, but it's possible some papers will get buried in a snow bank. We appreciate your patience. You will get a paper. As always, we'll have the latest, most up-to-date information on dailyherald.com.

But that's what we're doing. We want to know what you're doing.

What does your street look like outside your door? Have a hairy commute? Spot of good Samaritan? We're interested in seeing blizzard-palooza through your eyes. Email us your facts, stories and pictures to snow@dailyherald.com.

And what do you remember most from storms past? Do you have a picture from the historic blizzard in ‘79? A story of strife or silliness? Share it with us at storm@dailyherald.com.

In case you don't remember the dates of our biggest storms, here's the 10 highest snowfalls on record in the Chicago area:

2. 21.6 inches, Jan 1-3, 1999

We'll print your best memories and pictures in the paper and online.

Just in case you're wondering, I grew up in Missouri and my favorite snowstorm memories involve getting out of school and going sledding on the back of an old bubble-style refrigerator door. I swear, we went so fast that we broke the sound barrier.
