Man found dead after gun sighting locks down school

Sunny Hill Elementary School in Carpentersville was on lockdown for nearly an hour Monday afternoon, after a man was seen running down a road near the school with a shotgun, according to police.

Responding officers later found the 25-year-old man’s body in the Helm Woods Forest Preserve less than a mile from the school with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

At about 2:20 p.m. the man was spotted running east on Helm Road toward Sioux Avenue before heading into the forest, police said.

Authorities recommended Sunny Hill lock its doors while officers looked for the man in the preserve just east of the school.

The district lifted the lockdown at 2:50 p.m., after police found the man, authorities said.

Sunny Hill is a school that houses kindergarten through fifth grade.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification to his family, according to police.

The Barrington Hills Police Department and Kane County coroner’s office are continuing their investigation.
