Gofron helps Antioch past Grayslake North

She's been making all-tournament teams at Geneva and Lisle since her freshman season.

And Lindsey Gofron is all that.

Antioch girls basketball Tim Borries hasn't seen all that his junior guard can do, however.

He might have gotten a glimpse Wednesday night.

Gofron scored a career-high 19 points in helping Antioch rally from a 14-halftime deficit to defeat host Grayslake North 61-52 in a battle of two teams that have been playing better in the last month after slow starts.

It was the seventh straight win for Antioch (11-6).

“I've always been a passer,” Gofron said.

In the third quarter, she became the scorer.

With Grayslake North up 30-16 to start the third, after closing the first half with an 8-0 run, Gofron scored in the lane eight seconds in. Andi Potkonjak (12 points, season-high 8 assists, 6 steals) then floated in a 10-footer 20 seconds later, and the Sequoits were on their way back.

“I saw the scoreboard and I knew I had to step up,” Gofron said. “I knew my teammates would be there.

“We kind of got chewed out (at halftime),” Gofron added. “It put a fire under our butt.”

Grayslake North (6-12) still led 40-26 midway through the third after Shyanne Ludwick (team-high 15 points) banked in foul-line jumper. But Antioch got within 46-37 by the end of the third.

Gofron scored 11 points in the third, mainly on aggressive drives to the basket. Included was a nifty spin move.

“Lindsey was looking to score,” Borries said. “She was looking to take over the game.”

That was all right with the coach.

“I'd love to see her do it all the time,” Borries said of Gofron. “We sit back and watch Andi do it. There's no reason why she can't do it. When she is looking to score, that's what we need.”

Megan Borries took over in the fourth, scoring 12 of her 14 points. She sank a pair of 3-pointers off Potkonjak assists while the visitors were making their comeback.

“That's what I want her to do,” Tim Borries said of his daughter. “One of her main jobs is to shoot.”

A Potkonjak steal and dish to Gofron for a layup finally gave Antioch the lead at 52-51 with 2:56 left, and the Sequoits closed the game with a 13-1 run.

“I think we wore ourselves out a little bit in the first half,” Grayslake North coach Jim Sarver said. “I thought we held them in the third quarter, and then in the fourth quarter we kind of faded.”

Like Antioch, Grayslake North also has been playing better. The Knights, who also got 8 points and 7 rebounds apiece from Brianna Leon and Jordyn Bowen, started the season 1-10 but entered Wednesday's game having won five of their last six.

“My kids are making steps,” Sarver said. “You got to believe that you can win, and I think we believe it more and more.”

Antioch junior Brittany Kelly came off the bench to score 7 points and grab 7 rebounds.

“Brittany Kelly really stepped up for us,” Gofron said.

“I think our experience stepped up,” Tim Borries said.
