Naperville Central downs St. Charles N.

Naperville Central girls basketball coach Andy Nussbaum was more than pleased with his team's performance Wednesday at the 28th annual Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown.

And while her team lost, St. Charles North coach Colleen Brennan didn't come away all that disappointed.

Emma Ondik scored 16 points and Emma Donahue added 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Redhawks held off SCN, 53-44, in a consolation bracket game.

Naperville Central (9-5) will meet Hononegah in the 5 p.m. fifth-place game Thursday, while St. Charles North (6-7) meets Prospect at 3:30 p.m. for seventh place.

“I thought we played with a lot of energy today,” said Nussbaum, whose team lost to Fenwick in Tuesday's quarterfinals. “It wasn't perfect but by and large we had a lot of energy.”

The Redhawks led 13-8 after one quarter and 25-19 at halftime before extending the lead to as many as 18 midway through the fourth quarter.

Donahue scored 9 points in the first half and Ondik hit for 12 in the second half as the Redhawks effectively used their inside-outside game to frustrate the North Stars.

“I thought Emma Donahue was outstanding in the first half and I thought Emma Ondik was outstanding in the second half,” Nussbaum said. “I was pleased with the effort today.”

St. Charles North's game-long nemesis was shooting. While Naperville Central was 22 of 51 for the game, the North Stars could manage just a 15 of 53 shooting performance.

“The kids did a lot of good things today, our shots just weren't falling,” said Brennan. “The effort was there we just didn't finish some things. I was happy with the way we worked as a team, I just wish the ball would have fallen in the hoop with more frequency.”

Tess Fischer led the North Stars with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Sydney Russell added 11 points.
