Fox Valley photos of the year

It's a little bit amazing in an age when everyone and everything seems to be captured on video that the power of a single, well-crafted image still can move us.

It can make us laugh or cry. It can make us angry. It can amaze us. It can make us pause.

Through all the clutter of an endless news cycle, it can remain etched in our memories.

We asked the photographers in our Fox Valley bureau — Christopher Hankins, Brian Hill, Rick West, Laura Stoecker and John Starks — to share some of their favorite images of the past year.

Spend a little time examining these photographs and you'll see elation and sadness, glory and near misses.

You'll also get a feel for the talents of our shooters and their ability to bring you the awesome power of a still image.

Enjoy.

Cadet Starlet Bowlin, a student at Western Illinois University, makes an adjustment during placement of more than 1,700 flags for the Healing Fields event in Carpenter Park in Carpentersville on May 26. Each flag was placed as the name of an American MIA/POW soldier was read by members of the Dundee-Crown High School Honor Society. Residents who donated for the flags and helped place them could take them home after Memorial Day. John Starks/jstarks@dailyherald.com
Above, A.J. Sheehan, left, laughs as Ray Bohne leans in to tell him a story during a luncheon in honor of Pearl Harbor Day for World War II veterans hosted by VFW Post 1307 and American Legion Post 57 Dec. 7. Sheehan was in the Army and Bohne served in the Coast Guard. Both men live in Elgin. At right, Alyssa, 7, top, and her sister, Caylee, 5 gaze out a window in February.   Third-grader Michael Masters uses some body language as he tries his best to spell the word “October” during a spelling bee in March at St. John’s Lutheran School, Algonquin. His classmate, Abigail Smolinski, did spell the word correctly, but she forgot to capitalize the first letter, so both students moved on to the next round. Abigail eventually prevailed as the third-grade winner of the bee, which was part of Lutheran Schools Week activities. CHRISTOPHER HANKINS/chankins@dailyherald.com
