St. Viator finishes off Fenton

For the third straight season, St. Viator’s girls basketball team will play for the championship of its own Snowflake Classic.

The two-time defending champs advanced this time with a 29-22 victory over Fenton in Monday’s semifinal in the Cahill Gymnasium.

The Lions (8-5) will face Northside Prep (12-4), which defeated Guerin Prep 51-31 in Monday’s other semifinal of the 28th annual Snowflake.

The Lions topped Northside Prep 48-28 last week in pool play of the eight-team tourney.

Junior center Lauren Rooney collected a double-double against Fenton with 10 points and 17 rebounds along with 4 steals.

Junior guard Katie Gavin added 11 points for the winner while senior forward Maggie Dougherty added 6 points and 3 rebounds.

“Maggie gave us good energy off the bench,” said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness, who is coaching in his fourth Snowflake. “We persevered through a poor shooting night with a tremendous defensive effort and a 16-points offensive explosion in the fourth quarter (after totaling 13 points in the first three quarters).”
