Elgin man accused of predatory sex assault

Bail was set at $500,000 Friday morning for an Elgin man charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Judge James Hallock set bail for Sergio Cortes, 24, of the 300 block of North Spring Street.

The crime is a Class X felony punishable by six to 60 years in prison. The statute cited in the online record alleges the victim was under 13 at the time of the reported crimes, which it says occurred Oct. 1.

The age and sex of the victim were not available Friday. The charges were brought by the Kane County State's Attorney's office, but because the office was closed Friday for the Christmas holiday, no one was available to comment. The paper court file containing that information was unavailable because the court clerk's office was also closed.

Cortes' next court date is Jan. 7.
