Malnourished dogs recovering in Lake Zurich

Four dogs and two cats were recovering Saturday from dehydration and malnourishment at the Lake County animal control center in Mundelein after being rescued Thursday from Muddy Paws Dog Rescue, a Deer Park kennel where 18 dogs were found dead.

The animals face a long road to recovery, but the prognosis is good, according to a Lake County Health Department spokeswoman. Investigators are still looking into how the animals ended up at Muddy Paws and working to determine how long they had been left without sufficient food or water.

Kildeer Police said Diane Eldrup, 48, owned Muddy Paws, which is at 20429 N. Rand Road. She has been charged with four felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

According to its website, Muddy Paws was a no-kill shelter with a mission to “... put an end to the unnecessary deaths of innocent creatures and to help turn Illinois into the first No-Kill State.”
