Des Plaines man charged in attempted murder

A 21-year-old Des Plaines man was charged with attempted murder Tuesday after police said he shot an 18-year-old who was driving away from an argument in Schaumburg Tuesday.

Joseph Lazar, 21, of the 1000 block of East Stockton Avenue in Des Plaines surrendered to police after they surrounded his home at approximately 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to authorities.

Lazar was in a dispute with three people in front of his house at approximately 1:30 p.m. before a the driver and two occupants drove away without Lazar in the car, police said.

Lazar then pulled out a pistol and fired at the occupants of the vehicle as they drover away from his house, striking the 18-year-old Schaumburg driver of the vehicle, according to police.

The victim was able to drive away from the scene to a nearby gas station on the 2000 block of South Mannheim Road where emergency crews met him and transported him to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for a single gun shot wound.

Police said Lazar admitted to his involvement in the shooting to Des Plaines detectives and was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

A bond hearing is set for tomorrow in Skokie.
