• William Terpinas, Jr., an associate with the Commercial Real Estate Practice Group at Palatine's Lavelle Law, Ltd., accepted an appointment to the board of directors for The Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity (PHD).

The Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity was founded nearly 40 years ago by area resident Marion Stocker with the mission of providing pregnant woman with counseling, education and support. The organization recently moved its offices to Inverness, where it can co-locate counseling services with its Baby and Maternity Closet.

Terpinas has also been involved with St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) and Lavelle Law Charities activities including the annual food drive and Palatine Bowl fundraiser.

• Schaumburg native Kelly Altman, a senior dietetics major at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, has been serving an internship with I Sing the Body Electric, an arts and prevention program that places arts mentors with high school students in East-Central Illinois.

I Sing the Body Electric is a collaboration of Eastern Illinois University, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Systems, Paris Community Hospital, Lake Land College, the Regional Office of Education and WEIU TV, the PBS affiliate in Charleston. The award-winning program is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Community Health and Prevention. Funding provides high school youth with intern assistance and materials to create arts projects on health themes determined by a Center for Disease Control survey conducted biennially in the region. These themes include drugs and alcohol abuse, teen sexuality and body image.

Altman is the daughter of Jim and Cindy Altman of Schaumburg.

Aaron Tres, an eighth grader at Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine, was named to the Lutheran Sports Association (LSA) State Volleyball All Tournament Team and was voted Most Valuable Player for the boys' state volleyball tournament, which was held Nov. 5-7, in Springfield.

Tres, one of the team's captains, was selected as MVP by LSA officials and referees out of 117 boys, from 10 states qualifying boys' teams.

• The Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois (ILA of IL) presented the prestigious Cartwright Award to Inverness resident Paul J. Verisario during the association's annual convention held Oct. 6, in Springfield.

Verisario, who was honored for his role as a longtime industry, association and community leader, began his career with State Farm in 1963. He opened his own agency, All Security Insurance Agency, Inc., in 1977, and over the last 25 years has served the insurance industry in a number of roles including ILA of IL president and national president of the CPIA Society.
