Northwest girls basketball roundup

It's less than two weeks into the girls basketball season but Rolling Meadows can already call itself a champion.

Meadows completed a 5-0 run with a 45-38 victory over Mundelein on Wednesday night to take the top prize in the Mundelein Thanksgiving tournament.

Freshman guard Jacqueline Kemph led the winning Mustangs with 16 points, including 5 of 6 free throws.

Also reaching double figures for coach Todd Hatfield's champs were senior guard Madelynn Conlin (11 points) and freshman forward Jennifer Vliet (10).

Meadows broke on top 18-9 after one quarter.

Meadows junior guard Ann Marie Lynch scored 4 of her 5 points and teammate Sara Shumaker scored all 3 of her points in that period.

Fremd 74, Jacobs 45: Sophomore guard Ashley McConnell (23 points), senior guard Sarah Power (16 points) and senior forward Jaimie Groot (11 points) were top scorers for Fremd which finished 4-0 in the Dundee Crown tourney and is 5-0 overall.

Hononegah also went 4-0 in the tourney.

Hersey 73, Mother McAuley 70 (OT): The Maine West Tip-Off Classic got underway in dramatic fashion Wednesday night in Des Plaines.

Trailing by 9 points with under four minutes to go, Hersey's girls basketball team stormed back to tie the game in regulation before pulling out a 73-70 triumph over Mother McAuley in overtime.

The Huskies' big fourth-quarter rally was sparked by a 3-pointer from 5-foot-9 senior Michaela Dwyer and a couple of steals by Dwyer and Jen Hall.

In the overtime session, DePaul-bound Megan Rogowski scored 4 of her game-high 34 points as the Huskies improved to 2-0.

Rogowski scored 25 of her points after intermission and also added 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in the contest.

Hall finished with 11 points and 3 assists while Maggie Hogen added 11 points with 11 rebounds.

“Maggie Hogen and Stefanie Mueller (9 rebounds) rebounded so well,” said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. “We made a lot of mistakes but rebounding kept us in the game.”

St. Viator 54, Dundee-Crown 34: St. Viator improved to 2-2 in the Dundee-Crown tourney as senior guard Taylor Skala (16 points, 7 rebounds) led the way.

Other top contributors for the Lions were Katie Calmeyn (10 points, 3 rebounds), Katie Gavin (10 points), Diana VanStedum (6 points, 7 rebounds) and Lauren Rooney (4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks)

“Our defensive effort was outstanding the entire game and we exploded on the offensive end in both the third and fourth quarters,” said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness.
