Northwest girls basketball roundup

Her last name is Young. And she is only a sophomore.

But she sure is playing like a veteran senior.

Destinée Young tossed home a career-high 31 points with 9 rebounds as Hoffman Estates improved to 4-0 with a 56-39 triumph over Elk Grove in the Elk Grove-Lake Park-Hoffman Estates Thanksgiving tourney at the Lake Park West campus.

Junior Precious Ogunleye added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the Hawks while senior teammate Jada Stotts recorded 10 points, 4 assists and 7 rebounds.

The Hawks opened an 11-0 lead and never looked back, clinching the tourney title.

They will finish play against Harlan on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lake Park West.

Elk Grove, which lost for the first time in four games, was led by junior guard Michelle Calmeyn (12 points) and sophomore Kelly Naughton (11). Senior Maggie Fries and Naughton each had two 3-pointers.

Barrington 49, Maine South 38: Junior guard Nicole Collins was 4-of-5 from the field (two 3-pointers) and had 12 points as the Fillies (2-1) in the Bison Classic game at Maine South High School.

“Nicole had a tremendous game offensively,” said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. “She was very steady and made smart decisions with the ball.

“And I thought we did a real nice job with interior defense against their 6-foot-2 girl in the middle.”

Other top contributors for the Fillies were Abby Kirchoff (7 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist), Shelby Whigham (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Sarah Mass (6 rebounds, 3 points).

Kirchoff, Mass, Brooke Chandor, Sam Maasarani (2) and Whigham also had 3-pointers for Barrington.

Buffalo Grove 51, Regina 31: The Bison recorded their first win as BG senior Andrea DiPrima netted a season-high 22 points in the Bison Classic third-round contest at Maine South.

KC Dunne, Bailey North and Emily Cho each added 8 points for the winners.

WWS 55, Schaumburg 35: It wasn't too difficult to find where Wheaton Warrenville South's girls basketball team won Tuesday night's game against Schaumburg.

After trading leads with the Saxons for the first 11 minutes, the Tigers put together a 15-0 run in the final 4:37 of the first half to take a 29-15 lead and never looked back in a 55-35 triumph.

WW South, Schaumburg and Glenbrook South are all 3-1 heading into Friday's final round of the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament.

“We just started clicking and moving the ball,” said Tigers four-year starting guard Annie Shain, who handed out 4 assists with her 5 points, including a 3-pointer to end the first half. “We were just finding the person.”

The Tigers extended the lead to 32-15 when senior Hannah Credille hit a 3-pointer to start the second half.

Schaumburg battled back to within 34-28. A steal and layup by the Saxons' Alexis Carravetta ended the third quarter and 2 free throws by teammate Jenna Gerber (team-high 13 points) started the fourth.

But WW South answered the call again and gradually expanded the lead in the final six minutes.

Both teams were missing top inside presences due to ankle injuries. Tigers junior forward Kasey Gassensmith, who has scored 32 points in three games, injured her ankle Tuesday morning.

Saxons coach Ashley Berggren hopes to have Alyssa Saklak back soon. Berggren said the 5-foot-10 forward has been attracting some Division I attention.

Sophomore point guard Amanda Kelly added 9 points for the Saxons while senior guard Pomagier added 5.

Palatine 52, St. Viator 31: Palatine (2-2) earned its first win in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tourney over St. Viator (0-2).

Proviso East 57, Wheeling 29: Proviso East earned the win at the Niles North Thanksgiving tourney over Wheeling (0-3).

Milestone: Fremd coach Dave Power became the second Illinois girls basketball coach to win 800 games.

His Friars topped Niles North 65-26 at the Niles North Thanksgiving tournament in Oak Park.

Power, in his 34th season is 800-206.

He also coached Proviso West and Immaculate Heart of Mary and he has won three state titles (one at IHM and two at Fenwick).

Another Hall of Fame coach can reach 700 wins today.

Stevenson coach Tom Dineen, who won a state title with Buffalo Grove in 2000, will try for No. 700 at Maine West High School at 8 p.m. tonight.

The Patriots will face the host school of the Maine West Tip-Off classic. Maine West is coached by Derril Kipp, who notched his 700th win last season.
