Veterans honored by their communities

Veterans Day was celebrated throughout the area Thursday, including the village of Elburn hosting its annual parade.

At 11 a.m. the community paused to remember all veterans and then the parade kicked off at the American Legion on Main Street and ended at the Veterans Memorial alongside the village hall. On display at the Memorial was a battle tank, on loan from the U.S. Army.

Earlier in the day at Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School, students dressed in red, white and blue gathered around the flagpole to honor veterans. They recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “America the Beautiful.” The Harter Middle School brass ensemble also performed. Veterans were to visit classrooms throughout the day, and a school assembly was held at 2:40 p.m.

North Aurora hosted a celebration at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans Memorial at Fairview Drive and Willow Way. Other ceremonies were held at Marmion Academy in Aurora, the Batavia VFW, Aurora Central Catholic and St. Charles North high schools, and Waubonsee Community College.

Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles will have a program for veterans from noon to 3 p.m. Friday.
