Elgin murder trial resuming in morning

A Kane County jury will resume deliberating Saturday morning after discussing the case of Darren Denson accused of a 2003 slaying and home invasion in Elgin for 7½ hours Friday.

Darren Denson, 39 and formerly of Chicago, is accused of murdering Kyle Juggins by breaking into his apartment and shooting and stabbing him to death.

Juggins was shot in the back of the head and killed on Feb. 11, 2003.

Assistant State's Attorneys Greg Sams and Mark Stajdohar argued during the five-day trial that Denson and two accomplices went to Juggins' apartment in search of a drug dealer they planned to rob of $30,000.

Sams said the jury requested three transcripts from the five-day trial.

Denson was accused of wielding a knife during the attack, in which Juggins was killed on a mattress between his 15-month-old son and girlfriend.

Denson faces murder charges, along with home invasion and armed robbery charges.

Denson is the fourth and final person charged in the case. Denson, who also is serving a 50-year sentence after a murder and robbery conviction in Wisconsin, was charged with Juggins' murder in 2005.

Denson did not take the stand during the trial, during which attorneys John Paul Carroll and Teresa McAdams provided a defense.

The jury will report to Judge Timothy Sheldon at 10 a.m.
