LZ's Berwanger excels at Southern

Former Lake Zurich standout athlete Jennifer Berwanger is in her final season leading the Southern Illinois women's volleyball team.

Jessica Whitehead is in her rookie season with the Salukis.

The senior-freshman tandem combined for 57 of Southern Illinois' 75 kills to lead the Salukis past Evansville in five sets, 26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-8.

Evansville did not have an answer for either outside hitter as they recorded career-best matches with 29 and 28 kills, respectively.

The match was essentially a must-win for Southern to remain competitive in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, and the victory improves its record to 13-7 (4-6 MVC), moving the Salukis into a tie with Drake for sixth place. The top six teams at the end of the regular season earn a spot in the conference tournament.

In addition to her career-high 29 kills, Berwanger also col1ected 18 digs to count for her 52nd career double-double.

The Salukis are 7-2 at home this year and have won their last three contests in Davies Gym.
