St. Viator, Sacred Heart add to Hall of Fame

The St. Viator and Sacred Heart high school Hall of Fame underwent expansion Saturday.

At an induction ceremony and dinner in the Mahoney Court, 10 former athletes or coaches became part of the elite Hall of Fame group for the Arlington Heights Catholic school and the former Sacred Heart, an all-girls Catholic school in Rolling Meadows which closed in the late 1980s.

Here are the inductees:

T. Michael Abinanti (Class of 1970): Abinanti quarterbacked the 1969 varsity football conference co-championship team and was selected to the Chicagoland Prep League All-Conference team. He also played for three CPL baseball champions and was a two-time all-conference pick.

John Brawley (Class of 1969): Brawley was a three-year varsity basketball player and named to the CPL all-conference team in 1968 and 1969. He was also the varsity baseball captain and all-area honorable mention in 1969 and a three-time all-CPL pick. Brawley also captained the St. Mary's (Minnesota) baseball team in 1972 and 1973 and was a three-time all-conference pick.

Rory Dames (Class of 1991): Dames was the co-MVP for the soccer team in 1990 and played for St. Louis University from 1991 to 1995. He was the St. Viator varsity boys soccer assistant coach in 1995 before taking over the varsity girls team in 1996. He coached until 2005 with a record of 166-25-17 and state titles in 2002, 2003 and 2005, five straight state final appearances, six sectional titles and seven East Suburban Catholic Conference crowns.

Wayne Fiedler (1973-1987): Fiedler was an assistant varsity football coach and physical education teacher from 1973-1987. He was varsity defensive coordinator from 1973-1979 and offensive coordinator from 1980-1986. During his tenure, the Lions were ESCC champions six times and made four playoff appearances with a trip to the quarterfinals in 1974. Fiedler was also the assistant varsity baseball coach from 1973-87.

Andrew T. Johnstone (Class of 1992): Johnstone was part of the Lions' 400 free relay swimming team which was ranked in the top 20 in Illinois in 1989 and he was the co-captain of the 1991 team. He was an IHSA state qualifier in 1989, 1990 and 1991 and finished fourth in the state in the 500 free in 1991. Johnstone was the team MVP in 1991 and also was the junior and senior class president.

Thomas Kaufman (Class of 1983): Kaufman was a three-year, three-sport letterman and starter in football, basketball and baseball (1981-83) and was all-ESCC in all three sports as a senior.

Steven Klekamp (Class of 1985): A Daily Herald all-area football selection, Klekamp passed for 2,200 yards and his teams went 13-5 in 1983-84. He was the first quarterback in the Chicago suburbs to pass for 1,000 yards in consecutive years. He played at Harper College and was a junior college All-American, passing for 4,200 yards and 45 touchdowns. In 1987, he was the Wisconsin-Oshkosh quarterback.

Loryn King-Kromrey (Class of 2002): King-Kromrey was the Lions' 2000 cross country MVP and an all-ESCC pick. She won regional and sectional meets in 2000 and 2001 en route to second- and third-place state finishes. King-Kromrey was also the girls soccer MVP in 2000 and a three time all-conference and Daily Herald All-Area selection. Her 2002 team won the state title and she was named St. Viator's Female Athlete of the Year for 2001-2002.. King-Kromrey earned a scholarship and competed in track and field and cross country at Notre Dame from 2002-06.

Anne Emmons-Shutler (Class of 1997): Emmons-Shutler was the co-captain and MVP in track and field in 1995 and 1996. She holds the school record for the high jump (5-4 in 1996) and was an ESCC champion and state qualifier that year. In 1997, she was a state qualifier in the 400 and 800-meter relay and long jump. She was also a member of the ESCC All-Academic team.

Stephen Schlickman (Class of 1971): Schlickman was the 1970 cross country MVP and a three-year letterman. He was also the track and field MVP in 1970, setting a half-mile record (1:57.4) at the Chicagoland Prep League meet. He was the mile relay anchor in 1970 and an IHSA state final qualifier in the half mile. Schlickman went on to compete in cross country and crew at Georgetown.

Daniel Schoessling (Class of 1990): Schloessing was the MVP and ESCC all-conference selection in basketball and baseball for the 1989-90 school year and named “Male Athlete of the Year” for the 1989-90 school year. He played baseball and basketball at Benedictine in Lisle and was Benedictine's Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 1994.

John Wendell (Class of 1968): Wendell was a football (1966-67) and baseball (1966-68) player for the Lions and wrestled in 1968. He then became the Lions freshman football coach, freshman baseball coach and varsity wrestling coach from 1973-76. Wendell taught and coached at Buffalo Grove from 1985-2008 while also serving as an assistant football coach (1985-2008) and varsity baseball coach (1985-2008). Wendell won more than 400 baseball games, four Mid-Suburban League division titles, five regionals, one sectional and one supersectional. His 2007 team advanced to the Elite Eight. Wendell was the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association “Man of the Year” in 1991 and inducted into the IHSBCA Hall of Fame in 2002.

Ÿ Also inducted were four teams: 1996 girls track and field, 1977–78 hockey, 1980 football and 1999 boys golf.

Ÿ The Robert C. Artman “Sportsperson of the Year” Award: A dedicated family man, Jack Doherty is the father of three St. Viator alumni, Christopher ('91), Mark ('93) and Dina ('99).

He attended every sporting event and function his children participated in at St. Viator.

And Jack has continued to support St. Viator by attending most of its sporting events since 1999. Jack and his wife, Sheila, have been married for 42 years and live in Palatine.

Former Wheeling volleyball standout and Minnesota libero Krista Chin will be doing the play-by-play for the replay of the Wisconsin-Minnesota women's volleyball match today on the Big Ten Network at 3 p.m.

Football

Wisconsin-Whitewater junior tight end Jason Ford (Fremd) caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in a 45-0 win over UW-Eau Claire. Whitewater, the defending Division III national champions, are ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Feeder camps

The Rolling Meadows Junior Mustangs will be conducting basketball tryouts for the fifth grade girls and sixth, seventh and eighth grade boys on Sunday, Nov. 7 at Rolling Meadows High School.

Ÿ The St. Viator boys feeder basketball tryouts will be Saturday, Oct 30 (8 a.m.-11:30 a.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 7 (4 p.m.-7:15 p.m.) at St. Viator High School. Tryouts are for sixth through eighth graders.

Ÿ The Junior Cougar Wrestling Club will be holding registration at Conant High School on Monday, Nov. 1 in the wrestling room from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Any athlete in first through eighth grade is welcome. The club practices from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from November into March. The club is not-for-profit and cost for the entire season is $160, including tournaments. Boys rugby

The Arlington Stallions Rugby Club will hold an informational meeting and early signup for players and parents on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. at AthletiCo Inc., at 88 S. Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights.
