Prospect in title Hunt at BG

Sarah Hunt made Prospect girls volleyball history and the Knights made quite a showing at the Buffalo Grove Invite on Saturday.

Prospect won all five of its matches in two games and Hunt became the school’s all-time leaders in kills when she collected her 604th against Immaculate Conception.

The 6-foot-3 senior middle blocker finished the day with 628 career kills, surpassing the former mark of 604 set by Brittani Cottrell in 2000.

Prospect also defeated Palatine, Addison Trail, Buffalo Grove and Glenbard North en route to finishing the regular season with a 21-13 record. It marks the 12th time Riedy’s Knights have won 20 or more matches in his 17 seasons.

Hunt finished the tourney with 59 kills, 49 digs, 5 aces and 4 blocks while being named to the all-tourney team along with teammates Danielle Siwik and Shea Gallus.

Junior Sage Rebecca added 16 kills for Prospect while Siwik (56 assists) and Gallus (48) directed the offense. Annie Geweniger added 27 digs and Colleen Chuipek 31.

Victoria Ito and Alanna Zawlocki were all-tourney selections for host Buffalo Grove (5-30), which went 1-4 with a 27-25, 25-22 win over Palatine (2-3 in the tourney).

The Bison were led on attack by Zawlocki (24 kills), Bailey North (17), Maureen Corbett (14) and Kathy Hampton (13) while Ito collected 69 digs. Hampton (37 assists) and Celine Murphy (38 assists) handled the setting chores.

Sophomore defensive specialist Casey Dolen was selected to all-tournament team for Palatine (12-21).

Lake Park tourney: Coming off its third straight Mid-Suburban League championship, Hersey (29-6) took third place with 27-26, 25-14 victory over Fremd.

Glenbrook South topped the Huskies 25-11, 19-25 in the semifinals while Bartlett stopped Fremd 23-25, 25-22, 15-9.

Hersey, which went 4-1, was led on attack by Kelsey Haas (33 kills), Kristen Pedersen (25), Christine Solans (23), Alexa Stedman (19) and Abby Fesl (20), who also dished out 105 assists.

In Hersey’s final game against Fremd, Haas suffered an ankle injury near the net and Huskies coach Nancy Lill did not know the extent of the injury.

“We are hoping it’s not serious and won’t hold her out of the state tournament (begins next week),” Lill said. “Kelsey has been our go-to player in the crunch. She has over 300 kills so you can see how important she has been for us.”

Junior Kristen Pedersen also had 13 blocks, 12 digs and 7 aces.

“Kristen had a great tournament,” Lill added. “Her block was great and she was dominant at the net. Her hitting efficiency was unbelievable (47-of-52).”

Senior Jenni Mueller’s 62 digs led the Huskies backcourt.

Senior Alex Messner led Fremd (24-10) with 53 kills, 14 digs, 4 blocks while setter deluxe Kayla Price handed out 109 assists.

The Vikings were led in the back row by Rebecca Bagg (27 digs), Jaimie Groot (23) and Rebecca Clarke (17).

Jessi Wiedemann led the way with 6 blocks while Price had 5.

Conant (14-21) went 2-3 in the tourney.

Freshman Jenn Donnell led the Cougars’ attack with 28 kills followed by Kelly Anderson (21), Chelsea Vanicek (17) and Allie Bauch (16). Setter Kaitlin Chiero collected 73 assists and Rachael Yordon had 65 digs.
