Tom Morrison of Palatine turned heads from the 54th District to Springfield when he unseated longtime Republican Rep. Suzie Bassi in the GOP primary.
If the support he garnered then is an indication of his ability to challenge the way things are, we are optimistic he will serve the district well. He aims to cut fruitless offices and limit Medicaid spending.
A former teacher and now owner of a flood restoration business, he says he would hold the line on taxes that would stymie business growth.
Both he and his opponent, attorney Matt Flamm of Palatine, are seeking elected office for the first time.
Flamm is betting the district has more moderate tastes and points to a growing consensus the state will need more revenues.
However, we think Morrison's financial ideas would go further toward reducing the state's debt, and for that we endorse him.
The 54th District includes all or parts of Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Inverness, Hoffman Estates, Barrington and South Barrington.
