Schaumburg nets MSL West title

On a night when Schaumburg's girls volleyball team clinched the Mid-Suburban West with a 25-19, 25-9 victory at Hoffman Estates, the Hawks were winners, too.

Hoffman hosted a “Volley for the Cure match and entrance fees alone added up to $956 for breast cancer research.

“And the whole program worked hard to bring an additional estimated $1,300 that the girls collected in the hallways, said Hoffman Estates coach Dan Hutton.

“It was an emotional night, said Saxons Jeanette Pancratz, who guided her team to its fifth MSL division title since 1989 and second in four years. “We talked to the girls about the significance of this night, the people they knew that were affected from it and about playing for the cause.

Schaumburg (19-9, 9-1) finished one match ahead of Barrington (12-12, 8-2) in the West.

The Saxons will play at East champ Hersey (21-3, 10-0) on Thursday for the MSL title at 7 p.m.

Schaumburg rallied from an 8-3 deficit, tying Game 1 at 12-12 on a kill by junior Bria Hailey (3 aces, 2 kills).

The game was tied at 16-16 when the West champs nudged ahead for good on a tip by USC-bound Emily Young (6 kills, 11 assists, 10 digs, 1 ace).

“We were feeling confident, Young said. “We all had our minds set on this match. We wanted to win the conference.

After Young's kill, Hailey reeled off 3 service points, including an ace and another rifle serve which resulted in Travis's kill on an overpass.

The game ended 8 points later when Young went to her back option of Alyssa Saklak, who put down the kill.

In Game 2, the Saxons jumped ahead 6-0, getting 5 service points from Young.

Travis (team-high 7 kills, 3 aces) had a nice run of 5 service points (2 aces) to put the visitors ahead 17-3.

Senior Rebecca Thompson's kill made it 20-7 before the Saxons closed it out.

Senior Natasha Senecal contributed 9 digs for the winners.

“This was amazing, Thompson said. “We have worked so hard for it.

Hoffman received 2 kills from 6-foot sophomore Destinee Young and 5 digs from Tanya Skworch.

“Our girls has been asking for a great fan base and we promised it to them, Hutton said. “The enthusiasm was wonderful for this. And our girls came out and played well at the start. I hope we can play the rest of the season as well as we did in Game 1.

Hersey d. Rolling Meadows: Mid-Suburban East champ Hersey (20-3, 10-0) received 11 kills from Kelsey Haas and 21 assists from Abby Fesl in 25-12, 25-11 victory as the Huskies won their 30th straight conference match.

Host Meadows (5-16, 1-9) was led on attack by Rachel Mickey (3 kills).

Prospect d. Wheeling:Sarah Hunt (8 kills), Ashley Wabik (7) and Sage Rebecca (6) led host Prospect (15-11, 5-4) to a 25-15, 25-19 triumph. Hunt also had 5 kills and 7 digs.

Wheeling (17-11, 7-3) was paced on attack by Kayla Jordan, who was 8-of-8 with 4 kills while teammate Stephanie Fuchs collected 14 assists, 8 digs and 1 ace.

Elk Grove d. Buffalo Grove: Elk Grove received 10 kills from Diamond Boyd and 7 from Melanie Jarosz in a 25-23, 24-26, 25-18 victory. Jessica Condon handed out 26 assists and Jessica Balzano collected 14 digs for the Grens (17-15, 5-5).

Bailey North led the host Bison (4-24, 1-8) with 8 kills followed by Sierra Bugno (7) and Alanna Zawlocki (6).

Fremd d. Palatine:Fremd (20-8, 6-4) notched its 20th win with a 25-18, 25-21 triumph as senior Kayla Price (17 assists) set the attack led by Alex Messner (8 kills), Rebecca Clarke (5) and Claire Brady (2).

Kelsey Batz had 2 kills for the host Pirates (9-13, 3-7) while Kaley Siewarski and Heather Suiter each had 2 blocks.

Barrington d. Conant:The host Fillies (12-12, 8-2) posted a 27-25, 25-14 triumph to finish second in the MSL West.

Conant (8-16, 2-8) was led by Jennifer Donnell (4 kills) and Chelsea Vanicek (3).

St. Viator d. Marian Catholic:Host St. Viator (23-8, 3-4) recorded a 29-31, 25-20, 25-20 East Suburban Catholic.

Senior Emily Leazer served 6 aces and put down 18 kills while Lauren Falotico added 13 kills.

Lions senior Carlyn Clevenger (96-of-98) handed out 40 assists while Lauren Bunda led the defense with 20 digs.
