McHenry teen gets 10 years for Wheeling robbery

A McHenry teen was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday for his part in the late-night, armed robbery of a Wheeling liquor store in January.

According to police, the then 17-year-old Kyle Larke, of the 3200 block of Still Hill Drive, took about $300 from the register of the store, located in the 800 block of Milwaukee Avenue, while his co-defendant Tyson Burke, 27, brandished a shotgun.

The men fled the store in a 1996 Ford Explorer, according to police, who received a description of the vehicle and spotted it a short time later, said Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Bill Benson. When the defendants ignored an order to pull over, police elected not to pursue the vehicle out of concern for public safety, Benson said.

They sent the vehicle's description to area law enforcement agencies, Benson said. Eventually, the car and the defendants were recovered in McHenry. Authorities say both Larke and Burke, of the 3000 block of Cypress Court in McHenry, admitted their involvement to police.

Larke, who turned 18 last summer, received juvenile probation for possession of a controlled substance in 2009, prosecutors said. He subsequently spent six months in a juvenile corrections facility for violating that probation. He received credit for 272 days in custody.

Burke also faces armed robbery charges. He appears in a Rolling Meadows courtroom on Oct. 19.
