Scouting Streamwood at St. Charles East

Streamwood (2-3, 0-2) at St. Charles East (0-5, 0-3)

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Norris Stadium

Last year: St. Charles East 41, Streamwood 7

Last week: Streamwood 34, East Aurora 8; Batavia 28, St. Charles East 0

Outlook: Streamwood has won 2 games for the first time under coach Cal Cummins and could go .500 through 6 games for the first time since 2002. Reaching the break-even mark won't be easy against a St. Charles East squad hungry to earn its first victory of the season on homecoming night in St. Charles. The Saints have struggled offensively since losing their first- and second-string quarterbacks to injury, but there's nothing wrong with the legs of seniors Mike Brown and Zach Zajicek, a pair of hard-nosed runners. "Right now, they're trying a lot of things," Cummins said, "different formations, different sets, wildcat things, motion, etc. So that offers a bit of a challenge in itself. But they have some people up front who can get the job done, so we'll have to play hard and be consistent on defense." The Sabres counter with a defense that held East Aurora to 122 total yards last week. But offense is where Streamwood has shined lately; The Sabres have scored 76 points in two weeks. An offensive playmaker has been junior running back Alex Morrow, who leads all Fox Valley area rushers with 742 yards and 7 touchdowns on 104 carries (7.1 avg.). He ripped off an 81-yard touchdown against St. Charles North two weeks ago and a 71-yard scoring run last week against the Tomcats. Junior quarterback Dalton Lundeen has thrown 4 touchdown passes in the last 2 games, which could help keep the Saints from loading up against Morrow and the running game. If Lundeen can continue to complete passes as he has the last two weeks to receivers Blake Holder, Nick Pryor, Steve Sandoval and Matt Nykaza and tight end Ben Fritz, the Saints could be forced to respect the pass, thereby creating more running room for Morrow. "They are a very aggressive defense and they bring the house most plays with a lot of people in the box," Cummins said of the Saints. "We need to keep them off that game, spread them out a little bit and hope to get Alex going."
