Scouting Crystal Lake South at Jacobs

Crystal Lake South (5-0, 1-0) at Jacobs (3-2, 0-1)

When: 7:15 p.m. Friday at Jacobs Athletic Field

Last year: Crystal Lake South 50, Jacobs 6

Last week: Crystal Lake South 40, Dundee-Crown 0; Cary-Grove 49, Jacobs 21

Outlook: CL South, the No. 7 team in Class 7A, poses a formidable challenge for the Golden Eagles on homecoming night in Algonquin. To have a chance at the upset, Jacobs must find a way to contain the guy wearing uniform No. 8, do-it-all senior quarterback Drew Ormseth. The three-year starter has completed 27-of-52 passes for 604 yards and 8 touchdowns with only 1 interception. He has rushed for 381 yards and 5 touchdowns in 54 attempts. "No. 8 is the real deal," Jacobs coach Bill Mitz said. "He's the guy we've got to stop, no doubt about it. He's a great player for them and he's been doing a lot off things for them for three years. He reminds of No. 7 from Cary-Grove five or six years ago." Mitz was referring to the jersey worn by his son, Brian Mitz, a fleet-footed quarterback who led Cary-Grove to a state title game in 2004. Coach Mitz said he and his staff "discovered a few things" about some players during last week's loss. Specifically, a couple of two-way players will be kept fresher by playing on one side of the ball only. The Gators can clinch a playoff spot with a victory. The starters should be fresh after playing only the first half in a comfortable victory over Dundee-Crown last week. Defensively, CL South's 3-3-5 scheme is holding opponents to an average of 8.8 points per game. That unit's focus this week will center on Jacobs junior quarterback Jason Judson and junior back Caz Zyks, who is second in the area with 467 yards and 7 touchdowns on 86 carries (5.4 avg.). "Those are the two guys that concern us," Gators coach Chuck Ahsmann said. "Their fullback (Kyle Wright, 88-339-6) can rip off some yards, too, but Caz Zyks is a quality football player coming off the edge. And Judson can roll out and throw it. Cary limited him on the roll out. If we can do that, we'll be in good shape."
