Western Avenue work

Resurfacing of Western Avenue, from Fabyan Parkway to McKee Street in Batavia, is scheduled to begin today and is expected to be finished by the end of October. Beginning Monday, Oct. 4, the road will be closed. Residents of the Braeburn subdivision will receive a letter from the city detailing how to access the subdivision during the closure. Flooding fix meeting

There will be a special meeting of the Rob Roy Drainage District II board at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the Sugar Grove Township building, 54 Snow St., Sugar Grove. The board will review the proposal for the project involving the Mallard Point conveyance line and assessment to the Rob Roy outfall at Jericho Road. This relates to drainage problems experienced by residents of the Mallard Point subdivision.

U-46 academies open house

Elgin Area School District U-46 is holding open houses for eighth-graders and their families to learn more about the district's five high school academies. Students must complete an application process during the eighth grade to be admitted to one of the academies at Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin, Bartlett or Streamwood high schools. Representatives from the schools will visit U-46 middle schools this week. Each academy will host interested students and parents for informational sessions at 7 and 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Rec center talks

The Batavia park board has planned four community meetings to discuss the downtown recreation center project. The meetings are at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and Oct. 6 and 7 at the Batavia Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St.

Marmion pig roast

The Marmion Alumni Association is having a Cadet Kickoff "Porcine Palooza" pig roast from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 in Alumni Hall, 1000 Butterfield Road in Aurora. The event is open to those 21 and older. The $10 cover charge includes a ticket for the raffle drawings. Dinner and beverages will be sold separately. The Empty Can Band will perform.
