Cubs' Silva has elbow strain

Right-handed pitcher Carlos Silva has nothing more serious than tendinitis in his right elbow, the Cubs said.

Silva was scratched from Monday night's start in favor of Jeff Samardzija with what the club called a strained right elbow.

Team doctors examined Silva on Monday in Chicago and came up with their diagnosis. The Cubs say Silva will rejoin the team in St. Louis and that the team would proceed from there.

Silva had just come back from a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

Castro scratched: Shortstop Starlin Castro was a late lineup scratch because of a bruised left hip, the result of a collision last week. Darwin Barney replaced Castro at shortstop and in the second spot in the batting order.

Castro was 2-for-12 on the road trip after coming off a benching for making a mental gaffe on the bases.

"He's doing fine," manager Mike Quade said on his WGN radio pregame show. "Is he 100 percent? Probably not. He's getting a little bit better each day. He's played through it.

"I'm so proud of him because this is what we want. Learning to play this game and play it at a high level and play it at a championship level requires a lot of things. It's not just catching and throwing, It's playing through tough times, playing through a little pain and so on. He's had a good week handling all that."

Minor-league honors: Outfielder Brandon Guyer is the Cubs' minor league player of the year, and right-hander Chris Archer is the minor league pitcher of the year.

Both players have been keys to the Cubs' Class AA Tennessee farm club's run to the Southern League championship series. They'll be honored before the Sept. 25 game against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
